Former world No. 1 golfer shows true character after ‘do or die’ disaster and $10M blow

Masters champion Adam Scott has failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs after a tied 55th finish at the Wyndham Championship, but the Australian showed his true colors with his reaction

Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champion, tied for 55th at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, dashing his hopes of qualifying for the FedExCup Playoffs. This means Scott won’t be in the running for the Tour Championship’s whopping $10 million prize.

Over the weekend, Cameron Young became the 1,000th unique PGA Tour winner with a six-shot victory in North Carolina, marking the end of the Tour’s regular season. The top 70 golfers in the standings now advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three playoff events.

Unfortunately, Green Jacket holder Scott will be missing from the lineup after describing the Wyndham as a ‘do or die’ tournament and delivering a less-than-stellar performance, effectively taking himself out of the Tour Championship race.

With the 70-player postseason field now locked in, the FedEx St. Jude will whittle this number down to 50 based on standings. These players will then proceed to the BMW Championship in mid-August.

This second of three playoff events will further reduce the participant count to 30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta on August 21. All who make the final cut will also automatically qualify for the eight signature events on Tour next term, reports the Mirror.

However, Scott won’t be among the golfers vying for that $10M winner’s prize, after his tied 55th-placed finish on Sunday resulted in him ending the regular season ranked 90th.

Despite this setback, the 45-year-old Australian displayed his true character by sharing a positive and hopeful message on social media.

“Didn’t quite make the playoff push I was hoping for, but grateful for the journey and more motivated than ever,” he penned. “Back to the grind and eyes on the next one. See you at the BMW PGA Championship in September!”

According to his recent post, Scott is set to appear next at the BMW PGA Championship in England the following month, which should not be confused with the playoff BMW Championship taking place in Maryland on August 14.

Like Scott, reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy will also miss the action in Memphis this week, a decision based on the Northern Irishman’s personal preference.

McIlroy, who is currently sitting pretty at No. 2 in the FedExCup rankings just behind the formidable Scottie Scheffler, had a tough time at the event last year and disclosed in November that he would be giving it a miss in 2025.

“There’s a few tournaments that I played this year that I don’t usually play and that I might not play next year,” McIlroy confided to the Telegraph. “Like, I played the Cognizant [Classic] in Palm Beach Gardens, [the Texas Open in] San Antonio and the [RBC Heritage in] Hilton Head.

“And I’ll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis. I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year [tied for 68], and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings.”

World No. 1 Scheffler will indeed be participating in this initial playoff event, marking his comeback after an impressive win at The Open last month.
