Liverpool may be planning a sensational player swap to secure Newcastle star striker Alexander Isak before the summer transfer window closes — with Darwin Nunez potentially heading in the opposite direction.
Both Nunez and Isak face uncertain futures in the summer of 2025, and speculation continues to grow around their next moves.
Former Newcastle defender Stuart Pearce has suggested that Liverpool could use Nunez as part of a swap deal to finally land long-time target Isak, whose situation at St. James’ Park has recently taken a dramatic turn.
Last week, reports emerged that Isak suffered a thigh injury just before Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, prompting him to pull out of team training and remain in England. However, further reports claimed that the Swedish striker is now actively seeking a move away in search of new challenges.
Liverpool have admired Isak for a long time, but Newcastle have remained firm in their stance not to sell, valuing the 24-year-old at around £150 million.
Pearce commented: “If Liverpool sign Isak, the title race is pretty much over. They’d have an incredible goal threat alongside Mohamed Salah — it would be a game-changer.”
“I think if any deal with Newcastle is to happen, Darwin Nunez will likely be part of it. That could be what makes Newcastle finally agree to let Isak leave.”
A potential swap could benefit all parties involved — Liverpool, Newcastle, Isak, and Nunez.
“Nunez is an energetic player, and I believe Newcastle fans would quickly warm to him,” Pearce added. “He creates chances on his own, though he can be wasteful at times. But if he sharpens his finishing, Nunez could be a highly effective replacement for Isak.”
“If I were Newcastle, I’d say: ‘Alright, if we’re forced to let Isak go, bring us Nunez, and we’ll give him a proper shot.’ Fans at Newcastle love a striker who gives everything for the shirt.”
“You can imagine Nunez arriving, missing a few chances, but fighting on. He doesn’t back down — that’s a great trait in a forward. The best strikers don’t fear mistakes, and I honestly think he’d be a great fit at Newcastle.”
As for Isak, Newcastle have reportedly offered him a massive contract extension worth £200,000 per week — which would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history. Despite the lucrative offer, Isak appears determined to leave.
Speaking on the situation, manager Eddie Howe said: “He’s still our player, and he’s under contract. So in that sense, we still have control over his future. I’d like to believe that nothing is final yet.”
