Darwin Núñez’s frustration with his limited playing time under Liverpool manager Arne Slot has erupted into a reported clash, intensifying speculation about his potential move to Napoli and adding to the squad unrest at Anfield

The Uruguayan striker, who scored in Liverpool’s 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Preston North End on July 13, is said to be unhappy with his reduced role, having started just eight Premier League games last season despite the team’s title-winning campaign.

This tension has fueled ongoing transfer talks with Napoli, who see Núñez as a key target, while creating ripples of uncertainty within Liverpool’s squad as they prepare for the 2025/26 season.

According to sources, Núñez confronted Slot over his lack of minutes during a heated exchange at the AXA Training Centre, with the 25-year-old expressing frustration at being benched in favor of players like Cody Gakpo and the late Diogo Jota, even when fit. Slot, known for his tactical discipline, reportedly criticized Núñez’s work rate and consistency, echoing comments made in February 2025 when he said, “I can’t accept if a player doesn’t give everything,” after Núñez’s performances against Wolves and Aston Villa.
